The Poseidon Project: Unlocking the Future of UK Carbon Storage

The Poseidon Project: Unlocking the Future of UK Carbon Storage

With the UK Government’s CCUS Track 2 announcement expected in early summer, this Scottish Energy Forum event will address the important opportunity in moving CCS from subsidy dependency to a commercially viable industrial decarbonisation model.

We look forward to bringing some timely insights featuring Carbon Catalyst’s joint venture with Perenco and Harbour Energy, and specifically highlighting the UK’s first Carbon Dioxide (CO2) injection test for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCUS). This test involved injecting CO2 into a depleted natural gas reservoir in the UK’s Southern North Sea, providing essential data for the successful utilisation of highly depleted reservoirs for permanent geological CO2 storage.

Event Summary

The Poseidon Project aims for an initial injection capacity of 1.5Mtpa from 2029, scaling to a peak injection of 40Mtpa. Located in the Leman gas field, the project offers a total storage potential of ~1000Mt via depleted reservoirs and saline aquifers.

Poseidon will connect to the Perenco-operated Bacton Terminal in Norfolk and is strategically located to deliver decarbonisation solutions to East Anglia, London and the Southeast, as well as Continental Europe.

We will explore how projects like Poseidon can help transition the CCUS sector from a government-subsidised model to a commercially viable market, incorporating insights from commercial banking and insurance stakeholders. Additionally, we will discuss the importance of developing a robust, cost-effective supply chain to enable scalable and sustainable growth in the sector.

We look forward to welcoming guest speaker, Nick Terrell, Carbon Catalyst
