Nick Richardson is the Head of Exploration & New Ventures at the North Sea Transition Authority, the technical regulator and licensing authority for carbon storage activities within the United Kingdom.
Since joining the Authority in 2015, Nick has headed up all exploration and appraisal activities across the UK Continental Shelf, including licensing, operations, and strategy formulation.
Nick is accountable for the delivery of licensing rounds on the UKCS (including for geological storage), management of the UK’s subsurface resource portfolio, and driving the CCS industry’s appraisal programmes with the aim of substantially increasing storage availability in line with the UK’s net zero ambitions. Nick was responsible for the design and delivery of the UK’s ground-breaking 1st Carbon Storage Licensing Round, with his team now stewarding site-characterisation and spatial planning activities associated with the newly issued Carbon Storage Licences.
Nick is co-Chair of the joint industry-regulatory Subsurface Task Force and is a member of several other industry fora. He previously held various technical geoscience and leadership positions within E&P companies (Shell, Maersk Oil, Dana Petroleum), as well as working within business consulting services (PwC).
He holds a BA in Geology from the University of Oxford (St Edmund Hall), an MSc from the University of Edinburgh and a Doctorate from ETH Zürich.
